I DRINK

This wasn’t the first piece of art that I purchased; not even the first piece of “fine art”. However, I attribute this tongue-in-cheek piece to the beginning of my collecting journey.

On YouTube, I somehow stumbled upon Tommy Hilfiger’s Architectural Digest tour of his $50 Million Plaza Hotel Penthouse. During the tour, while he and his wife guided AD through their home, I saw this piece and immediately fell in love with it.

Like many during the COVID-lockdowns, my alcohol consumption saw an uptick. I’ve always been a fan of craft cocktails but during that time I found myself actually making the drinks I’d usually order at dinner or a bar. I also tried out new recipes, experimented with different liqueurs and just had fun with the whole experience of bartending at-home. It became a regular moment of joy during an extremely uncertain time.

I found this piece to be a humorous way of highlighting the times we were living in.

While it’s a high edition piece, at the time I wasn’t really concerned about that. Even now, it’s not necessarily an issue but I have focused more (especially in the last year or so) on collecting original works. With all that being said, I love the detail in the silkscreen here and the varnish gave it the appearance of being a unique work.

At the end of the day, I thought to myself, “if it’s good enough for Tommy Hilfiger, it’s good enough for me.”
